Spiritual Gifts: Discovering and Using What God Has Given You

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:4–5 (NKJV)
When a person becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, God not only grants salvation but also equips that believer with spiritual gifts. These gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to enable believers to serve others and build up the Church.
Spiritual gifts are not meant for personal recognition or status. Instead, they are entrusted to believers so they can contribute to the mission of God and strengthen the body of Christ.
Understanding and faithfully using these gifts allows believers to participate actively in God’s work on earth.

The Source of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts originate from the Holy Spirit.
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:11 (NKJV)
This means that every believer receives gifts according to God’s wisdom and purpose. No gift is accidental, and no believer is without a role in God’s kingdom.
Each gift reflects God’s grace and His desire to work through His people.

Diversity of Gifts within the Church
Scripture describes a variety of spiritual gifts given to believers.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them.”
— Romans 12:6 (NKJV)
Examples mentioned in Scripture include:
Teaching
Encouragement
Leadership
Service
Giving
Mercy
Evangelism
Wisdom and discernment
These gifts enable the Church to function effectively as a unified body with diverse capabilities.

Every Gift Has a Purpose
Spiritual gifts are not given for personal benefit alone—they exist to serve others.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)
When believers faithfully use their gifts:
The Church grows stronger
Needs within the community are met
The Gospel is advanced
God’s glory becomes evident
Each gift contributes to the overall mission of the Church.

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts
Believers often discover their gifts through prayer, service, and guidance from other mature Christians.
If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies.”
— 1 Peter 4:11 (NKJV)
Practical ways to discover spiritual gifts include:
Seeking God in prayer
Studying Scripture
Serving in different ministry areas
Receiving confirmation from church leaders and fellow believers
As believers step out in service, their gifts often become clearer.

Using Gifts with Humility
Spiritual gifts must always be exercised with humility and love.
But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:31 (NKJV)
The “more excellent way” that follows in Scripture is love.
Let all that you do be done with love.”
— 1 Corinthians 16:14 (NKJV)
Without love, even the most impressive gifts lose their value.

Faithful Stewardship of God’s Grace
Believers are called to use their gifts responsibly.
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
— 1 Peter 4:10 (NKJV)
God entrusts these gifts so that His grace can flow through His people. Faithful stewardship means serving consistently, selflessly, and with a heart that seeks to honor Christ.
When believers use their gifts faithfully, the Church becomes stronger and the message of Christ spreads further.
